Concert by the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble of Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, directed by Dr. Michael Zemek with accompaniment by Gail Baldwin. This program marks the 200th anniversary of the choir's namesake, Jenny Lind (1820-1887), the Swedish Nightingale. During her American tour from 1850 to 1852, Jenny Lind came to influence the American songbook, popularizing songs from her repertoire. Music publishers came to realize that the words "as sung by Jenny Lind" printed on sheet music could guarantee good sales. This concert presents a sampling of music associated with Jenny Lind, and was organized in conjunction with the annual meeting of ASTRA, the Association of Swedish Teachers and Researchers in America, on October 16-17, 2020, hosted by the Scandinavian Studies Program and the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College.
