Meeting 1.1: Course overview, and what is a manifold?

I begin with a very brief overview of the main themes we will explore this semester: interactions between (low-dimensional) topology, computational complexity and algorithms, and quantum computing and error-correcting codes.

We then begin to review the definitions of and foundational issues concerning the topological objects that will be of most interest to us: compact, piecewise linear manifolds.
