Carle Illinois College of Medicine’s first alumni are touting the school’s emphasis on innovation and solving real-world medical problems as key to their success in matching into top residency programs. Carle Illinois incorporates engineering principles throughout its curriculum and emphasizes data science and technology to improve patient care.
Dr. Christina Moawad -- a member of Carle Illinois’ inaugural class – aspired to become an orthopedic surgeon, a very competitive field in which women are underrepresented. She says residency program directors were impressed with depth of experience she gained at Carle Illinois, especially in projects geared toward finding solutions to health care challenges.
4:15@ - With my engineering projects, extra curriculars, Capstone Projects, data science projects. All of things that were part of our curriculum stand out on my applications and in my interviews. These are things other students are not applying with. All my interviews touched on these unique aspects of my application that I was able to get through Carle Illinois
Moawad is a resident at New York University Long Island, her top choice.
Carle Illinois’ inaugural class achieved a residency match rate of 100%, with class members receiving offers from prestigious teaching hospitals and matching into some of the most competitive specialties. Moawad hopes her experience opens the door for future Carle Illinois graduates to follow in her footsteps in pursuing orthopedics as a specialty.
