George Miller’s first semester at Illinois was Fall 1970. He knew right away that he had found the right place, immediately feeling at home in Champaign-Urbana. As a freshman, he saw an ad in the Daily Illini promoting a new living-learning community – Unit One at Allen Hall. He signed up “on a lark,” and was accepted to be a member of the first group of Unit One residents. There, he met Professor Neely Bruce, and joined his American Music Group, of which he was a part for the next three years. After graduation, he taught high school business for 33 years, where he also led the Future Business Leaders and Gay-Straight Alliance. In this interview, he discusses his student experience, life on campus at the end of the in loco parentis period, the beginning of Unit One, and using the Library and University Archives.
