The STEM Illinois Communiversity Think and Do Tank Webcast series is designed to provide a space for members of the university and community to think about how to create an ecosystem where everyone thrives.

In this segment, Drs. Bell, Walker and Hicks discuss their journeys from childhood to becoming physicians (e.g., childhood dreams, the role of race, mentors, etc.). They also discuss their current experience as Black male physicians during COVID-19, police murders and social unrest. Our final topic includes a discussion about social, technological and health interventions that can create health equity.

Growing up in Chicago, former Illini football standout, Dr. Kameno Bell was introduced to the medical profession by his parents at an early age. Since 2007, he has served as an emergency medicine physician at New Jersey's Hackensack University Medical Center.

Dr. Garth Walker is an Emergency Medicine specialist at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and a researcher at Northwestern Buehler Center of Health Economics and Policy. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he majored in economics and minored in chemistry.

Dr. Chris Hicks is a clinical associate of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine. He is also part of the medical team for the WNBA Chicago Sky team.
