Bark Cloth (Aotearoa)

Ngāi Tūpoto, Te Rarawa and Ngāpuhi artist Nikau Hindin is a cloth-maker dedicated to reviving and preserving the artistry of aute (bark cloth).

From Aotearoa New Zealand, Hindin shares the process of harvesting and beating of aute (paper mulberry) bark to a fine and paintable cloth.

This video was developed as part of the Art Gallery’s Djamu Youth Justice program which supports First Nations young people in the NSW Youth Justice System through the sharing of cultural knowledge and practice, with a focus on caring for Country and caring for self.
