On Thursday, October 7, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. CT Dr. Mark Braunstein of Georgia Tech discussed "Health Informatics on FHIR: A Global Perspective." From its invention in 2011, HL7's Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard has proven to be the long-sought solution to sharing of electronic patient record (and other health) data. This talk begins with a brief history of some of the long unsolved challenges in the field and the need they demonstrate for effective interoperability. It then briefly describes the history of failed proposed solutions culminating in the FHIR standard as the first successful approach. It then explains FHIR basics followed by a global 'grand tour' of FHIR applications for the diverse use cases in care delivery, population and public health, patient empowerment, and research for which it has been or is being deployed.
