This is a podcast introducing the health status of urban villagers. Deriving from "Chengzhongcun" in Chinese, urban villages are a unique from in China's rapid urbanization. Literally, it refers to the villages surrounded by urban areas, with high population density and building density. The residents in urban villages can be describes as locals and migrants, who are both born and brought up in rural environment but the former’s hometown is going through rapid urbanization. The migrant workers are the majority of residents in urban villages, and the living conditions are very basic, thus their health status are under threat.
The Hukou system is a household registration system in China, restricts only those with a Hukou of this city can get public services and urban housing. As migrant workers often can't see the standards for getting a Hukou, they are excluded from many social securities like medical insurance.
The basic living conditions and lack of medical insurance lead to the high threat of migrant workers. In this podcast, I'll provide cases study to illustrate how these factors impact their overall health status, and what actions have been taken to improve these.
