This poster describes a Quality Improvement (QI) study done at the UIUC College of Medicine in the Clinical Simulation Center. Standardized patients (SPs) formerly provided face-to-face feedback to students in an unstructured and subjective manner. This method was found to be suboptimal, with SPs providing inconsistent and potentially unproductive feedback to students. Efforts were undertaken to improve this feedback by training our SPs to utilize a vetted, structured format with defined, pre-scripted prompts, templates and descriptive language. In this study, we evaluated SPs perception of their knowledge, awareness, and skills related to providing feedback before and after participating in these training sessions. We were able to show, based on data obtained from pre-and post-training surveys, that there was statistically significant improvement in each of the above-mentioned domains. We anticipate further studies to objectively evaluate the effect of this intervention.
