The city chosen for the podcast is Detroit in the state of Michigan. Detroit has declined since the 1950’s till present date marred by racial segregation, redlining, riots, loss of jobs, depopulation, underdevelopment, auto centric planning and more recently bankruptcy as well. In the midst of these issues, lack of access to a quality transit system further stacks up with these issues. The auto-centric planning of the city and the suburbanization in the region still has long lasting effects on the city’s transportation system. Currently, the present bus system serves only Detroit city and suburban areas in the fringe of the city but the employment opportunities and other amenities have dispersed further outwards into the suburbs. The lack of a regional transit system due to the constant tug of war and lack of consensus amongst the counties surrounding Detroit has impacted the socio-economic characteristics and health and well-being of Detroit residents. The podcast is about the mobility concerns in the city of Detroit and its impact on their socio-economic characteristics and health and wellbeing. The quality of a city’s public transport system acts as a prerequisite for ease in accessing amenities such as health care, education, employment and other activities. The lack of access to a transportation services causes social and financial inequity thereby impacting the health and wellbeing of the community. The interplay transit access with employment, public health and food security along with other socio-economic characteristics is the highlight of the podcast.
