This
study aims to investigate if a relationship exists between first-year medical
student's personality and how they perform in problem-based learning. To
assess personality, the study procedure is administered through the Big Five
Inventory (BFI). To assess students’ performance, we use 2 instruments of
faculty evaluations at the end of a PBL course. The first instrument is a
facilitator assessment developed at CICOM for formative purposes as well as
part of the final course grade. The second is a standardized instrument
called Tutotest, that has shown reliability and validity. IRB approval to
conduct the study was granted in August. In the class of 42 first-year
students at CICOM, 29 have provided informed consent to participate in this
study. In this session, a preliminary summary of their personality traits
will be presented in an anonymous, aggregated fashion.
