Probing the wrinkles of space-time. Einstein’s theory of relativity, one of the pillars of modern physics, embodies equations that have never been solved in their full generality. But a simplified solution has been found: it defines the behavior of one of the most exotic objects in space — the black hole. Led by Larry Smarr and Ed Seidel, the University of Illinois relativity group uses advanced computational techniques and hardware to simulate this ultimate gravitational abyss. The results could light the way towards a final numerical solution of Einstein’s theory.
