Chapter 3: Mechanical Properties of Materials

In this lecture, Professor Johnson describes the common results observed when testing the stress vs. strain response of ductile and brittle structural materials, including steels, cast iron, aluminum, and concrete.  A detailed description is made of the various load regimes of ductile materials.  Failure surfaces of uniaxial tensile test specimens of ductile and brittle materials are described and explained.  Finally, brief discussions about non-isotropic materials and fatigue failure of materials under elastic loading conditions are given.
