When
people consider privacy, they often think about sensitive categorical
data, such as educational or medical records. Yet metadata (the data
that describes that data), and its lifecycle from collection, to
organization, to storage and retention to access, to use, is similarly
personal and often overlooked in policy-making and governance decisions.
Dr. Sanfilippo will offer an overview of metadata: differentiating
among descriptive, structural, administrative, reference, and
statistical metadata. She will discuss its privacy implications in
research, social media, emergencies, public spaces, and education.
