Foresight for regional transportation planning: Lessons from Central Illinois

Ana Mendoza, McLean County Planning, Bloomington, IL

This talk, based on recent regional transportation planning processes in the Champaign and Bloomington (IL) metropolitan areas, will show how well-designed community outreach measures can combine with effective team building to create plans successfully. You’ll learn about both the process of plan-making and the plan itself, analyzing both strengths and shortcomings. The experiences show that there’s no one “right” way to create a plan, and that the most important part of plan creation is getting to know your community and being involved in the whole process.

Speaker

Ana Mendoza, a GIS Specialist with McLean County Planning, Bloomington, IL, has a passion for natural science, sociology, analyzing data, and creating stories with the information analyzed. She graduated with a BAUSP and a minor in Informatics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. During her junior and senior years, she interned with the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission as a transportation planner. She went on to obtain a master’s degree from the University of Glasgow in Urban Transport; returning to Illinois, she joined the McLean County Regional Planning Commission as an Assistant Planner.
