Web Workshop: Social Media Analytics
From Abriel Shipley
Q: Where can people sign up to use Synthesio now and Crimson when it returns?
A: Depending upon your area of work (communications or research), there’s a super short form to fill out. If you’ve already emailed Ashley (me), no worries, I’ll work with you to get you added! Here are the form links:
* Communications: Go.illinois.edu/UseSocialMediaAnalytics
* Research: Go.illinois.edu/SocialMediaResearch
Q: Are we charging for access to Synthesio/Crimson?
A: No. (Yay!) Access is free.
Q: Can users get access to historical data with Synthesio?
A: Not really. Where the confusion comes in is this: users can get historical data for a query but it’s only data that other searches have collected. After you start your search, you get all tweets matching that query going forward.
Q: Does Synthesio listen to Reddit?
A: Yes, Synthesio is an official Reddit firehose partner.
Q: What does the Macroscope do?A: The Macroscope provides a platform with an easy interface and open computational methods to conduct social media analytics research. As a platform, it will continue to evolve and provide access to a variety of transparent methods for working with these data. The formal name of the application that we can demo, and that is contained within the Macroscope, is SMILE (Social Media Intelligence and Learning Environment). We’re happy to demo but we can’t add anyone to it just yet (sorry!).
